2018 Speaker Series 

The New Hope Historical Society has announced the lineup for its 16th Annual Speaker Series that will be presented every Monday in April beginning at 5 pm at the Parry Mansion in New Hope. This year’s topics range from the history of portraits to antique clocks, Sherlock Holmes and the Delaware and Lehigh Canals.

Each presentation is followed by a reception in the elegant Parry Mansion American Empire dining room. Admission is free for members of the New Hope Historical Society. There is a $15 admission fee for non-members of the Historical Society. For reservations, contact the Society at 215-862-5652 or at newhopehs.org.

​Barbara H. Lewis, a popular portrait and landscape artist from Bucks County will open the series on April 2nd with a discussion about the history of portraits from the earliest days in England to the present time. Ms. Lewis was recently selected to paint the portrait of Judge Albert J. Cepparulo, Judge of the Bucks County Court of Common Pleas who retired from that position last year, and now serves as a senior judge. She will be discussing the history of portraiture from the early days in England to the present time.

On April 9th, Ashley King, antique clock, cuckoo clocks and music box expert and proprietor of the Clock Trader in Quakertown, Pennsylvania, will talk about the evolution of timepieces. He is a specialist in restoring antique clocks and watches, and invites those who will be attending the lecture to bring their own clocks and watches for an evaluation. Mr. King is a popular speaker who has presented discussions to local and national groups.

Popular Antiques Roadshow participant Sebastian Clarke will be on hand at the Parry Mansion on April 16th. Mr. Clarke is the Director of Estate services at Rago Arts and Auction Center in Lambertville, New Jersey. Arriving in the U.S. in 1995, he worked as an apprentice restorer and art handler for Simon Parkes Art Conservation. He began his career in auctions at C.G. Sloane, served as a Specialist in the European Furniture department at Sotheby’s, as Director of the English and Continental furniture department at Freeman’s and at Doyle New York as a Senior Vice-President and Director of the English and Continental Furniture and Decorations department. Mr. Clarke is also an auctioneer, well-known for his work on the charity circuit.discuss his experiences on the longtime BBC hit show and will offer tips on how to manage your collections.

On April 23, Joseph Shannon, an expert on Sherlock Holmes and a Master Sherlockian since 2014 will discuss the evolution of the modes of transportation in the United Kingdom from horse-drawn carriages to the Underground, especially as they related to Victorian and Edwardian times. He will be showing illustrations from the famous illustrator Sidney Paget that will demonstrate how the modes of transportation were depicted in the original Strand Magazine serialization of the Sherlock Holmes novels and short stories. Mr. Shannon has a Masters of Arts degree in Education from St. Joseph’s University in Philadelphia.

The Speaker Series concludes on April 30 with Elissa Garofalo, President and Executive Director of the Delaware and Lehigh National Corridor. This year marks the 30th anniversary of the organization. Ms. Garofalo led the way in the development of 132 miles of trails along the Delaware and Lehigh Canals and she was instrumental in merging the Delaware and Lehigh Canal Heritage Corridor with the National Canal Museum. She will be discussing her organization’s achievements over the past three decades and the challenges that lie ahead.
